Michael Taylor, more popularly known as Sri-lanka was born in Kingston,Jamaica on January 18, 1989. He grew up with both parents in a humble dwellingin the Kencott Community. He attended the Beriam Basic School, Melrose Primary & Junior High School and Kingston Technical High School where he established from an early stage in his life that his passion was to dance and entertain.
His dance career started officially in March 2006, when he formed a male Dancehall Group called M.O.B (Men of Business) along with his dance colleagues Crazy Hype and Ringo Mob. As a founding member of the group, Sri-Lanka played an important role as one of the creators for the many steps that enabled the group to become popular on the dancehall entertainment scene in Jamaica and around the world. Some of the dance steps the group created were ‘Calm Dem Down’, ‘Sri Lanka’, ‘MOB Rock’, ‘Crab up’, ‘Johncrow pitch’, ‘Black President’, ‘BarackaMedz’, ‘Guh fi Dem’, ‘Happy Feet’ ‘Above the Clouds’and more. In 2007 they were the winners of the JCDC Reggae World Dance Championship. They collected the Stone Love Award for the best New Dance Crew in 2008and in 2011 for Best Choreography Group. Sri-lanka got the opportunity to travel and showcase his talent along with his group members when he went to The Cayman Islands for Shows with Chi ChingChing in 2007 and again in 2008. In 2009 he went to 5 cities in England including Brixton, Luton, and Birminghamfor Club Shows, where they did freestyle and choreographed performances.
In 2010, the founders of MOB part ways, despite the separation the members were still identified as MOB and continued to use the name. Sri-Lankaformed his own dance group with Nicholas Robinson (Trice Rifical), Occonor Black (Ramus), OshaneCallam (Don Rifical) and Ramone Robinson (TG).The group made their big cameo in the International TV Show called “In The Dance” where they participated in the battles, party scene and stage performance. To show how multi-talented and versatile they were Rifical Team recorded their first song in 2011 and entered a competition called “Run The Track” which was aired live on one of Jamaica’s top local stations CVM TV. The song was well received and they won the opportunity to do a live performance at Reggae Sumfest, Dancehall Night in 2011. “So Rifical, “Clouds” and “Thank Him in the Morning”where the three songs in their repertoire and later that night they performed with Fambo. Before 2011 came to an end they did the Official Music Video for the “So Rifical”song. This inspired them to officially change the group name to Rifical Team with Sri-Lanka as the CEO.
As a solo dancer Sri-Lanka was nominated in DanceJa Awards as Male Dancer of the Year for 2011 and Dancehall Teacher of the Year for 2012. He started working on his teaching skills from 2011 where he would be the main dancehall teacher for the different Japanese dancers who visited Jamaica every month. He got his big break as a Dancehall Teacher representing DanceJa Team in 2012 when he travelled to St. Petersburg Russia for True Jamaican Camp (Cultural Exchange Dancehall Workshops and Seminars) along with 4 Jamaicans Andre Cosmic, John Bling Shelly and Latonya Style. Sri-Lanka also did workshops in Kazan during his trip. He got experience in teaching more than 6 workshops which included old school and new school dancehall steps and he was the judge for the battles. He showcased the raw, idiosyncratic, spiritual feeling of authentic dancehall dancing and everyone fell in love with his charismatic, electrifying and exuberant personality.
In Jamaica Sri-Lanka is highly respected and recognized as an Outstanding Dancehall Dancer. He is considered by many as one of the most popular, reliable, energetic, consistent and unique Street Dancers that has stepped out of his comfort zone and elevated to great undertakings. Sri-Lanka’s dream is to be able to sufficiently provide for his family and give back to his community by working hard as an entertainer, while representing his country as a cultural ambassador.
