It all begun when the panama Rail Road and Canal was constructing, where workers from all Caribbean islands including Jamaican, migrated to work. Many of these people, even nationals were drawn towards Jamaicans unique culture, lifestyle and music. Panama is first Latin country to sing Spanish Reggae/Dancehall, Puerto Rico then follows and gradually transform reggae to Reggaeton.
Dancehall in panama is mainly referred to as Passa Passa. Today this sub-culture has matured into a highly energetic Dancehall scene and is still growing as the younger generation grows. Walking in the streets of panama you will encounter Dancehalholics(Dancehall addicts) practicing the new dance moves of Jamaica, from music blasting from their radio, as by-passers stare in amaze.
Dancehall have fuel and inspire these youngster for that, There is alot of dance competition in various age groups right throughout the year that is aired on their national TV; At times top prize may include a trip to the mother land of reggae, Jamaica. Earlier these competitions are being assisted by government as a youth development program which attracts a large audience.
The clubs are full from Thursdays until the end of the weekend; there you will see nationals both bilingual and non-bilingual gyrating to the old and new beats of Dancehall.
